H.E Zoran Zaev

Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia

Zoran Zaev was born in Strumicaand was educated with a Bachelors of Economics and Finance and a Masters in Monetary Economics from Skopje University before joining his family-owned trading company, and participating on the boards of several companies, banks and public enterprises.  

Zoran Zaev has held numerous positions in local and national politics, with a commitment toward progress, transparency and international and national cooperation.  

He entered politics as a Member of Parliament of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia in 2003, progressing through numerous positions in party politics and government. 

In 2005 he was elected Mayor of the City of Strumica, the youngest mayor in the country. During his term, the city won national and EU-wide recognition, including the Best Practice Award from the Council of Europe for the first Public-Private Partnership in the country.  

 He was elected as Prime Minister in 2017. During his election and term he has focused on promoting the concept of shared living and cultural cooperation, Euro-Atlantic integration and restoring the trust of strategic partners. Several historic agreements were concluded under his term, focusing on international cooperation. In August 2017, the Agreement for Strategic Partnership, Friendship and Good Neighborliness was signed with the Republic of Bulgaria, and in June 2019, an agreement was signed with the Republic of Greece for resolution of the historic name issue and the establishment of friendship and cooperation. In July 2018, Prime Minister Zaev was officially given the invitation for NATO Membership.  

Throughout his two year mandate as Prime Minister, Zorn Zaev has received high commendation, including the Ewald Fon Kleist award from the Munich Conference on Security, and recognition for best practices promoting cooperation, unity, inclusion, diversity and positive thinking. In 2019, Prime Minister Zaev and Prime Minister Tsipras were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.  

Zoran Zaev has a wife and two children.
